The Jackson farm has 140 aces of tillable land
and permanent pasture including a 20 acre grove of mixed aspen and
alpine fir.
Over the summer, at 4200 feet, this dryland farm depends on timely rains to raise crops. With regular summer fallowing and rotations between oats and alfalfa (slideshow), the Jacksons avoid using both pesticides and herbicides. Regular applications of animal manure collected over the winter, help keep the soil productive.
From December through March (slideshow), their
fields are covered with snow and temperatures stay below freezing with
rare exceptions.
Located on the farm are three groundwater wells and one 340 foot drilled well. During the late summer months the groundwater wells dry up. These wells are used to water the livestock.
